The shadow of the war in Vietnam falls heavily over the film. By 1969, the American incursion into the country was falling apart – morale among the troops was collapsing, support back home had rapidly declined and by the end of the year, President Richard Nixon had despatched a squadron of eighteen B-52 bombers armed with nuclear weapons to the border of Soviet airspace. In Gulager’s film, the boys can be seen as both the desensitized victims of the relentless media coverage of the film (the 1968 Mei Lai Massacre was still dominating the media coverage of the war throughout 1969) and would, had the war continued, eventually been the next generation of young men to be drafted and sent off to die on a foreign battlefield. The score again underlines all this with its occasional military air and the stony-faced boys lining up as a firing squad to mock “execute” their beaming and entirely unaware new playmate would surely have resonated loudly with 60s and 70s American viewers. A year after George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968), Gulager again used film horror to shine a light on the real horrors playing out in South East Asia and being beamed nightly into every American home.
