Note : Here's a gem that I think should be more widely seen. It's ostensibly a sort of psychological slasher, but it's also been called the most giallo American film ever made. The influence from Don't Look Now is evident, most obviously in the mysterious raincoat-clad killer, but the religious themes, weirdo characters, and sadistic violence are extremely giallo-like. There's also an abundance of interesting camera work, several solid performances, including from Linda Miller, Mildred Clinton, Paula Sheppard, Jane Lowry, a very young Brooke Shields in her feature debut, and Alphonso DeNoble, playing an extremely repulsive pedophile. As a curiosity, exploitation king William Lustig worked as an SFX makeup artist on this, and appears on one of the commentary tracks. If you like psychological slashers, giallo inspired films with religious themes, or morbidly obese men with shit-smeared sweatpants, this is the film for you.
In early 1960s New Jersey, divorced mother Catherine Spages' life is disrupted when one of her daughters, Karen, is murdered in church on the day of her first communion, and suspicion falls on the older sister, Alice. Catherine's ex-husband Dom starts his own informal investigation parallel with the official one lead by Detective Spina. Catherine's sister Annie moves in to help, but doesn't get along with Alice, and soon after Alice is nearly sexually molested by their perverted landlord Mr. Alphonso, Annie is attacked and stabbed by a masked figure in a raincoat. Annie blames Alice, who's sent to a psychiatric institution for evaluation, but while she's there, Dom is lured to an abandoned building and murdered, and the killer seems to have religious motives, so how does the friendly local priest fit into everything?
This remaster is quite nice, though a bit overly grainy in some sequences, but color and contrast are nice, and there's no film damage or dirt to speak of. Mono track is fine, commentary tracks quite interesting.
