In un futuro non troppo lontano, il governo dittatoriale degli Stati Uniti è travolto da una guerra civile che vede coinvolte più fazioni e insanguina la costa est. A New York, il celebre fotoreporter Lee Smith salva da un attentato suicida Jessie, giovane collega che lo idolatra. Lee però ha altri grattacapi: insieme al socio Joel vuole a tutti i costi raggiungere Washington DC prima del 4 luglio - quando i ribelli faranno irruzione nella capitale - per intervistare in esclusiva il presidente. Si uniscono ai due anche Jessie e Sammy, reporter veterano che mette in guardia il gruppo sulla pericolosità del viaggio.
