The film was the first Western from Budd Boetticher, who later became famous for his work in the genre. “I became a western director because they thought I looked like one and they thought I rode better than anyone else," said Boetticher later. "And I didn’t know anything about the west.” It was also the director's first film in color and his first under a long term contract with Universal Pictures.
In the original script, Murphy's character died at the end of the movie. However, the studio decided to change it to reflect the actors's rising popularity.
Audie Murphy takes on the role of Bill Doolin who is unjustly accused by corrupt railroad officials of helping rob a train with his old friends the Daltons and their gang. After being forced to become a fugitive from law, Bill Doolin, decides to join up with his old gang. The Doolin gang then decide to rob some banks. They attempt to rob two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas but the robberies do not go as planned. Several gang members are killed but as luckily, Doolin escapes. He is made the new leader and the gang begins a new series of robberies.
