Note : A weird, eerie take on the zombie genre here from director Gary Sherman and legendary genre screenwriter Dan O'Bannon, and it's pretty original and atmospheric. Definitely a slow burn, but the small town gothic feeling, strange occurrences, quirky characters, and compelling weirdness makes it work pretty well for me. There are also some strong performances from James Farentino, Jack Albertson, Melody Anderson, Lisa Blount, and a pretty young Robert Englund. For once I think the early 80s cinematography works in the film's favor, all foggy, desaturated, and cold, it fits the mood, although I wish this remaster was a bit less grainy.
In the small coastal town of Potter's Bluff, a photographer getting intimate with a local woman is beaten by a mob and set on fire, while the locals take pictures of him. Soon after, more weird deaths occur, and sheriff Dan Gillis tries to figure out what's going on, helped by the town's eccentric mortician Dobbs. At the same time, Gillis' wife Janet starts acting strangely. When Gillis hits a man with his squad car, leaving a severed, twitching arm stuck in the grill, and he's is attacked by the arm's owner, who flees into the night with the limb, he starts suspecting something extremely weird is going on in the town, but he has no idea how deep the mystery goes.
This is a decent remaster, the grain is a bit too prominent for my taste, and the gauzy cinematography never seems to quite come into focus, but I think that's just how it was shot. 7.1 remaster sounds good, original mono too, and with four commentary tracks, you can get about as much information about the production as you'd ever want.
