The plot of the original game revolves around the ancient legend of Spard. Two millennia ago, ruthless demons ruled people, but then one of these demons — Sparda stood up for humanity and put an end to despotism. He sacrificed himself by locking the great Mundas and all his minions in their own dimension, thus saving the Earth and the people. After himself, he left his wife and two children. Twenty years before the events of the game, the family was completely attacked — the dark forces killed a woman and one child.
