Fabrice Pascal Quagliotti - Parallel Worlds HD (2020 - Elettronica) [Flac 16-44]
Do you remember the Rockets?
At the end of the 1970s, this eccentric French band won the hearts of Italians with an extraordinarily original hit, a space rock reinterpretation of "On The Road Again" by Canned Heat. Even today, despite the abundant four decades that have elapsed since its founding, the group enjoys a large following in Europe, also gained thanks to the sparkling bald and silver alien look sported in public appearances.
How can we forget the tribute paid by Elio and Le Storie Tese on the occasion of the final evening of the Sanremo Festival in 1996, when they went on the stage of the Ariston dressed in the same way they did? An ironic act of reverence towards a musical reality that, between interruptions and restarts, has given us several albums worthy of attention.
In this category we can now insert "Parallel Worlds", the solo debut of that Fabrice Pascal Quagliotti who of the Rockets is not only the soul and mind, but also the only survivor of the original formation. The fourteen tracks of the disc represent fragments of soundtracks for films never made. With the exception of a handful of vocal samples, the work is entirely instrumental; an absolutely wise choice, able to give the right emphasis to Quagliotti's synths.
The French artist's keyboards are the fulcrum around which an idea of electronic music, perhaps not particularly innovative, but extremely suggestive, revolves. And it could not be otherwise, since we are talking about a work with an explicit cinematographic connotation. In fact, every single piece of “Parallel Worlds” seems to have been written to accompany moving images.
Fabrice Pascal Quagliotti starts from the lessons learned by Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis to add, from time to time, those little personal touches capable of instilling the right atmosphere. But maybe I should talk about atmospheres, considering the great variety of the album. The listener finds himself tossed between "Kraftwerkian" influences, epic tones, dance reminiscences, refinements of piano ballads, ethnic encroachments (very beautiful "Japanese Tattoo") and even some timid industrial temptation, as the rough "Mezcal" shows us. All this happens in constant balance between cultured and popular citations, in a synthetic mix halfway between experimentation and sound from television themes and cuts.
There is much and perhaps too much in this first solo outing by the Rockets leader, still looking for a cohesive sound but already on a good path. If you are passionate about the synthesizer in all its forms, I strongly advise you not to miss “Parallel Worlds”: Quagliotti is a champion of the instrument.
