Note : Here's a kind of undervalued little supernatural thriller, which sports a hell of a cast, Denzel Washington in the lead, John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, and James Gandolfini supporting, and Elias Koteas making a small but memorable appearance. It maybe tries to be more high-class and serious than the subject matter requires, and it doesn't quite pull it off, but the concept is great, the performances of course rock-solid, the cinematography very pretty, and the ending is nice and twisty. A horror movie you can show to your grandma, but still, you know, cool.
Detective John Hobbes witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese, who seems to be very happy to meet Hobbes again, shakes his hand, and recites a monologue in a weird language, before joyfully dancing his way to the gas chamber. Soon after, a string of murders reminiscent of Reese's convinces the police they're dealing with a copycat, but Hobbes follows clues left by Reese and the new killer, and tracks down a woman whose police detective father committed suicide after a series of similar occult murders. This leads him to make disturbing discoveries about demonic possession as someone or something keeps taunting him.
This is not a new remaster, but it's quite good quality, limited, tight grain, nice contrast and color, not fantastically sharp, but all in all good image. The 5.1 track sounds good, and the commentary track is interesting enough.
