Dopo 3 mesi dalla cattura di Tom, la Seconda Massachussets è in guerriglia contro un gruppo di Alieni. Al di là del fiume, una base militare aliena è stata installata per impedire alla base umana di spostarsi. Intanto Tom, dopo aver subito un trattamento neuronale tramite biotecnologie aliene, viene liberato dall'incubatrice, e convocato dal capo alieno, un umanoide, che tramite un Impianto di Karen, comunica a Tom che la razza umana potrà trovare salvezza solo se la Seconda Massachussets consentirà in modo pacifico all'esercito alieno di farsi rinchiudere in una riserva. Tom non accetta l'offerta, ma il capo Alieno, convinto del fatto che la razza umana non possa resistere alla tentazione di salvarsi, lascia libero Tom, insieme ad alcuni membri dell'esercito tenuti prigionieri. Tom assiste all'esecuzione di questi uomini, mentre lui viene lasciato libero. Dopo aver rimediato una moto, riesce a tornare a Boston. Mentre uccide uno skitter viene accidentemente colpito dal figlio Ben, che stava sparando allo stesso Skitter.

Weaver discovers a shocking truth about an old friend and must decide how to best protect the 2nd Mass. Maggie and Isabella are forced to work together, while the remainder of the 2nd Mass attempts an escape led by Tom.
The 2nd Mass arrives at a safe haven. As the two groups make plans for the final assault on the Espheni, the 2nd Mass begins to realize that things aren't exactly as they seem.
Injured, Tom takes refuge with a unique family who has distanced themselves from the fight, giving him a glimpse of life without war. Hal and Isabella's romance grows as they search for a missing Tom. Meanwhile, The 2nd Mass locates an Espheni device that could be a linchpin to winning the war... if they can figure out how to use it. And Maggie makes a decision that has consequences for her and the entire 2nd Mass.
