The film is the film adaptation of the novel The High Rise, written by J. G. Ballard and published in 1976.



London, 1975. Robert Laing is a young physician, fascinated by lifestyle in a skyscraper, a kind of isolated community with people living in luxury and moving away from property almost exclusively to work. The building houses its creator, architect Anthony Royal, who designed it as a self-sufficient place to meet all the needs of the inhabitants.

After renting an apartment on the 25th floor of the building, Robert Laing discovers a world of people with different attachments, and at the same time begins a relationship with Charlotte, a single mother who works as an architect's nurse.

Gently, the structure begins to succumb to problems due to its own technical complexity and residents have to learn to live without the protection and comfort guaranteed by a technology they have always taken for granted and whose operation really know very little.

Increasing difficulties push tenants to divide into groups: the cohesive and self-sufficient community dreamed of by the architect crushes into so many "tribes" increasingly hostile along the lines of fracture that first correspond to different lifestyles (parents vs. single) and Then - with the plight of the situation and the growing scarcity of fundamental resources such as food and security - increasingly to the social class of belonging (low plans against high floors).

As in the Ballard book, as the level of conflict increases and worsens in the condominium instead of "escaping" or looking for help outside, the inhabitants tend to go out less and to stop completely, to take refuge and live Exclusively within the structure.

When Richard Wilder, young filmmaker and friend of Laing, is moved to the second floor by weight, injustice will kick off violent clashes in the skyscraper.
