Let's forget for a little while that we're listening to an individual of 13 years of age, and critique this album as we might any other jazz artist of repute. Let's measure the work against the vast library, the mass of creativity and performance excellence that has defined this particular style of jazz, hard bop, for decades. Of course, as with most other hard bop jazz artists, Joey Alexander mixes in his versions of modal and free elements that extend the performance to a master level. In particular Sunday Waltz, a song that spotlights Joey's wonderful use of phrasing and melody. The title track Countdown sounds like it could have been torn from a Thelonious Monk release. It also reveals the young protege's ability to create unique, and very personal arrangements and give due credit to his influences. And to further show the artist's knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for the art he is creating, he adds a Charlie Chaplain tune to the mix. Joey brings in Chris Potter on the poignant and moving piece Maiden Voyage. And just to make sure this release "don't mean a thing" the track Criss Cross is included; and spun with some exceptional free jazz feel. The final three tracks begin with the Billy Strayhorn standard Chelsea Bridge. A song that has been arranged for and performed by some of the Jazz worlds most accomplished artists, now to include Mr. Alexander. For Wee Folks is a stunning rendition of the Wynton Marsalis arrangement and incorporates a smooth jazz feel with elements of modal and free mixed in to spice it up a bit. This phenomenal release is topped off by the third of Joey Alexander's original composition titled Soul Dreamer. From front to back, this effort should stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the most memorable of Jazz offerings. And to come back to that age thing, this serves only to excite the Jazz world with the thought of what is to come.
