More than any other Jazz musician, Miles Davis personified the modern jazz artist during the last 35 years of his career. During the second half of the 1950s Miles Davis became the dominant figure in jazz. Miles set the tone in style and attitude for a couple of generations, an icon of the hip. The first years of Miles' recording career are traced on these 82 sides. From classic encounters with Charlie Parker, the immortal "Birth Of The Cool" sessions, to spirited live dates and the lovely sessions with Sarah Vaughan.
The set opens with Miles feeling his way towards fluency in the hothouse of Charlie Parker's bop combos, and not sounding as badly as some might remember. He is no Gillespie or Navarro, but in his somewhat distant manner he is the seed of the so-called "cool" movement that grew from his groundbreaking 1948-50 nonet. That extraordinary band and set of arrangements are heard here in both the Capitol studio sides and in the atmospheric live dates from the Royal Roost, the latter introduced by DJ Symphony Sid with the kind of glib hipness more suited to the latest bit of pop candy: "Here's a wonderful thing, a little thing that John Lewis knocked out; it's his own blues called "'S'il Vous Plait'". Despite critical plaudits and Sid's blandishments, the nine-piece was well ahead of public taste and consequently short lived. The set concludes with Miles back to bebop small group work with Tadd Dameron and Sarah Vaughan. Taken together, it opens the account of probably the most celebrated trumpeter in jazz. --Mark Gilbert
