New Model Army - Today Is A Good Day (2009)
Cover pic.
New Model Army are without doubt one of the world's most legendary underground cult bands. Founded by mastermind Justin Sullivan in 1979, on the one hand they had a significant influence on the development of all types of genres (from post-punk, folk rock, political rock, Goth and Metal), on the other they have never been categorically classified into any of these genres. New Model Army remain in a class by themselves. "Today Is A Good Day", their eleventh studio album, is a good enough place to start for anyone who has never heard New Model Army before and it is also an album that should keep the faithful followers happy. Furthermore it should actually have any former fans who went off the boil a bit wondering why they ever doubted the band in the first place and renewing their affection.
Armed to its teeth with unflinching guitar, innovative direction and, as always, the leap from something recognisable to something unaccountable, this album shows why New Model Army remain one of the most incisive bands in the UK who are still gloriously in control of their own destiny 25 years on. For those seeking a more challenging musical representation then this is the band for you.
In a word this is excellent.
