4 CD box set, this focusing on the ‘Shouters’, the lead singers of R&B ensembles, who sometimes even sang unamplified in front of their bands. This time period was an interesting era in music, and proved to be a spawning ground for the birth of rock and roll. Early Rhythm and Blues was just that, using the blues format and style while adding a rocking beat to it, developing into its own genre. This box set represents a treasure of source material, a bridge directly connecting its roots in the blues to the future of rock and roll. Rhythm and Blues of this period has been a source and inspiration to a wide variety of rock music throughout decades to follow.
This collection gives a good introduction to the R&B era. It was released in 2005 by German label Membran. A few of the recording artists included will be recognizable to blues enthusiasts, such as B.B. King, Memphis Slim, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Otis, and a few others, those who found an amount of success performing to all types of audiences. Most of the musicians in this collection, however, were primarily popular in their own local communities, since segregation of the races was still very much intact during that time period in the United States.
