Note : This is of course the film that started the wave of J-horror in the late 90s and early 2000s, which really took off with the American remake three years later. For my money, the remake is actually the better film, more pared-down, scarier, and lacking the connections to local folklore and Japanese tradition that this film tries to build, which makes the horror more alien and unknowable. But this is still a very good film, building a lot of creepy atmosphere out of fairly minimal elements, and it's very effective. The twist ending (essentially the same as in the remake) is unexpected and horrifying, and all in all, the whole film just drips with oppressive, unavoidable doom.
A TV journalist starts investigating the mysterious death of her niece, who died seven days after going on a trip to a forest resort with some friends. When it turns out all the friends died in different places at the exact same time, and she's been hearing rumors of a cursed videotape that kills everyone who watches it seven days later, she goes to the resort, finds and watches a strange videotape, and now has seven days to solve the mystery before she herself dies. Helping her is her mildly psychic ex-husband, the father of her young son, and things don't get easier when her son also watches the tape...
This is a decent-looking BluRay, with fairly sharp video and good sound. The blacks are a little crushed, and I could have wished for a bit more saturation, although it's hard to judge what's part of the intended look, and what's the result of an imperfect transfer. The commentary track gives good cultural and historical context as well.
