Note : The New Year is coming up, so let's do some more looking to the future, this time from a vantage point in the most orange part of the 70s, and a rage-filled James Caan has just about had it with these leisure suits, so he decides to vent his frustration in a futuristic, ultra-violent sports arena. Supporting cast includes John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck, Moses Gunn, Pamela Hensley, and Barbara Trentham. As often is the case, the plot is far-fetched, but it's a basic man and individuality versus a cruel, unfeeling, corporate system setup. Sports/action sequences are quite good, though, and were very influential on a bunch of other media.
In the far future of 2018, Jonathan is the team captain of the Houston Rollerball team. The corporations that run world and the game, really an outlet for society's violent urges now that plutocracy has brought peace and prosperity to the world, want Jonathan to retire, but he refuses. The rules to the game are changes to make it more violent, leaving Jonathan's friend Moonpie in a coma after a brutal game against Tokyo, although Houston eventually wins. Jonathan realizes that the ruling elites are afraid of him because his success in the game works against its purpose, to demonstrate the futility of individual effort, and the next game will be to the death.
This German 4k remaster isn't fantastic, although a lot of that comes down to the source material, I think, it's all a little fuzzy and gauzy, although color and contrast is decent, maybe a bit too much pop in those omnipresent oranges, the blacks are slightly clipped, and grain is a little inconsistent. Sound is fine, commentary tracks quite interesting and informative.
