La serie segue le vite di cinque freschi poliziotti che si sono appena laureati presso l'accademia. L'addestramento è finito, ora comincia la vita. Devono imparare non solo ad avere a che fare con i loro doveri di agenti di polizia, ma anche ad affrontare i problemi e le aspettative delle loro famiglie e amici. Sono i primi soccorritori e stanno per imparare che non è la quantità di formazione che prepara alla vita. «Per servire, proteggere e...», questa è la frase usata nella sala riunioni prima che il turno inizi con il poliziotto che conduce l'incontro. C'è sempre un significato importante nella trama dell'episodio o nel contesto. La frase usata più spesso, tuttavia, è «servire, proteggere e non fare casini».

A fun, fresh, high-stakes drama with a twist of danger follows the lives of five young, ambitious cops right out of the Academy. From their very first day on the job, these rookies are plunged into the world of big city policing, a world where even the smallest mistake can have life-or-death consequences and serious emotional fall-out. The soul of this close-knit group is 26-year-old perfectionist Andy McNally. Honest to a fault, all Andy has ever wanted to be is "good police." Her father was a cop, and while he wasn't the best cop – or the best father – Andy knows she'll never find this sense of family, loyalty and excitement in any other job. The series explores the trials, triumphs, competition and camaraderie of Andy and her rookie family – boyfriends, best friends, mentors and competitors – who are about to learn that no amount of training can prepare them for life.
With the 15 Division restructuring looming, Andy and Sam’s wedding comes just in time for the gang to celebrate one last hurrah. But when Andy is taken off-course by a hitchhiker and then stranded on the side of a dead-end road with a dying man, she finds herself with no way to get help – or let Sam know she hasn’t bailed. Will she save the man’s life? Will she make it to her wedding?
Now that Sam and Marlo’s baby girl has arrived, it’s clear nothing could have prepared Andy for this moment. So when Juliet offers Andy an opportunity to leave town for 4 months on an undercover project, Andy starts to consider it. Meanwhile, Jarvis reveals the shocking news that 15 Division will be restructured following the corruption scandal.
As the officers of 15 Division try to move on from the corruption scandal, a heat wave hits and Jarvis opens the division to the public as a cooling station. Andy heads out with a very-pregnant Marlo to find a volatile woman who’s gone missing after group therapy, but neither Andy nor Marlo are prepared when Marlo suddenly goes into labor.
With Oliver still the prime suspect in the bombing of 15’s evidence room, Andy, Dov, Gail, and Nick undertake a risky – and potentially career-ending – plan to prove that Commissioner Alonso Santana is corrupt. Meanwhile Traci shadows Steve Peck, hoping to calm her fears about his involvement in the bombing.
Andy and Sam are shocked to learn that Oliver is the prime suspect in IA’s corruption investigation into 15 Division. What’s worse, they only have until end of day today to find Chris Klem – the missing explosives-dealer – and clear Oliver’s name before he takes the fall.
