Nel 1939 l'alpinista austriaco Heinrich Harrer parte per una spedizione in Tibet con l'intento di scalare il Nanga Parbat, senza curarsi delle preoccupazioni della moglie Ingrid incinta, che affida all'amico Horst. Nel frattempo in Tibet, un bimbo di quattro anni viene designato come nuovo Dalai Lama e venerato dai fedeli. Quando gli scalatori arrivano al campo base, nel turbine della tempesta di neve, vengono fatti prigionieri dai soldati inglesi e scoprono che è scoppiata la guerra e loro, come austriaci, sono considerati nemici della Gran.
