Note : Is it allegory or subtext if it's right there in the film title? Abel Ferrara tries to find out, and makes a very allegorical vampire movie about a philosophy student who develops a bloodlust that overwhelms her life. It's about what you'd expect from a movie about a philosophy student vampire, but it has very nice, stylish, stark black and white cinematography, a great cast, including Lily Taylor, Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, Edie Falco, Paul Calderón, and Michael Imperioli, and a pretty good, if simple, story. A bit different from Ferrara's other films, and better for it.
Philosophy student Kathleen Conklin is attacked one night by a mysterious woman who bites her neck and drinks her blood. She soon develops the typical symptoms of vampirism, and her personality changes to become more aggressive and cynical. After attacking several people and ranting about sin and guilt, she meets another vampire who claims to have almost overcome his addiction, and who recommends she read Naked Lunch (see, this is that kind of movie). She successfully defends her dissertation and receives her PhD, but the graduation party turns into a bloody orgy...
This is a very nice remaster, showcasing the deep blacks and prominent but not annoying grain of the black and white cinematography, at times so stark it looks like everything's been dipped in motoroil (or blood). The 5.1 track is also nice, with some mid-90s R'n'B for good measure, and the commentary track is, as usual with Ferrara, honest and informative.
