Note : If someone asked me what film codified the tropes of the "summer camp slasher", my first and obvious answer would be Friday the 13th, but thinking about it, more of what we consider the clichés are at least as indebted to this film, which came out one year later, being the breakthrough of infamous asshole Harvey Weinstein, who co-wrote the story and produced. It also features the very young Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter in their feature debuts, amongst a surprisingly charismatic and competent cast, and gore effects by Tom Savini. All in all, it's pretty good, although the ending might be a bit pat.
Five years after a prank gone wrong left alcoholic summer camp caretaker Cropsey horribly burnt, he's released from the hospital, just as another summer camp on the same lake gathers a bunch of horny counselors and weirdo kids. A three-day canoe trip to a remote part of the creek turns into a nightmare as people start going missing, their canoes mysteriously drift off, and a raft launched to go get help shows back up with no signs of life...
This remaster looks pretty good, reasonable grain and sharpness, slightly duller colors than I would have liked, but nothing huge to complain about. Sound is also fine, and the commentary tracks are entertaining.
