Note : Some more of the Roger Corman/Vincent Price Poe cycle here, although this is something special. It was marketed as a Poe adaptation, but the only reference to Poe here are a few lines from his poem "The Haunted Palace" at the beginning and end of the film. In reality, this is an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", making it the first film adaptation of Lovecraft, and a pretty good one, too, though it takes quite a few liberties. Vincent Price is in fine form, the village of Arkham looks appropriately spooky, we get Lon Chaney Jr. in a late role. It's not that faithful an adaptation, but we get both the Necronomicon, references to Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth, and a vague glimpse of a fishman, implied to want to breed with human women, in apparent reference to The Shadow over Innsmouth.
The plot might be familiar: Charles Dexter Ward, his wife in tow, returns to the village of Arkham, where more than a century earlier, his ancestor Joseph Curwen was burned alive for necromancy, to claim the "palace" (more like a mansion) he's inherited. The people of the village shun him, because Curwen placed a curse on the village that to this day makes children there be born with deformities, and also because Charles is a dead ringer for his ancestor (in another coincidence, they both remarkably resemble famed horror actor Vincent Price). Charles is inclined to sell the mansion as soon as possible, but the more he contemplates a portrait of his long-dead ancestor, the more his behaviour and demeanor seem to change, and even his skin seems to become gradually covered in gray grease-paint...
This is a quite good looking restoration, not super sharp, but clean and with decent color. The commentary track this time is not with Roger Corman, but rather with a couple of writers, one of them a Vincent Price biographer.
