A thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
The Strain riprende il tema apocalittico e lo mescola sapientemente al genere horror creando una serie che negli Stati Uniti è diventata subito cult. Nata dalle menti di Guillermo del Toro e Chuck Hogan, racconta la storia di un mondo minacciato e di un gruppo di uomini e donne che si ritrovano senza volerlo a diventare gli unici in grado di salvare la razza umana.
La serie inizia quando un aereo con le luci spente e il portellone sigillato atterra all’aeroporto internazionale di New York City. Il Dott. Ephraim Goodweather, epidemiologo a capo del locale Centro Controllo Malattie, e il suo team giungono sul posto per indagare sull’accaduto, ma si rendono rapidamente conto di avere a che fare con una misteriosa epidemia virale tanto antica quanto letale: il vampirismo. Mentre la situazione intorno a loro degenera, Eph e suoi uniscono le forze a un gruppo di volontari per combattere la minaccia, salvare la città e con essa l’umanità intera.
The Strain, che vanta tra i produttori esecutivi il co-creatore di "Lost" Carlton Cuse, si basa sul romanzo "La progenie", scritto dagli stessi Guillermo del Toro e Chuck Hogan. Ha debuttato il 13 luglio 2014 sul canale FX e il primo episodio è stato diretto da del Toro in persona che ha anche firmato la sceneggiatura insieme a Hogan. La serie è stata già rinnovata per una seconda stagione e gli autori hanno ipotizzato un arco narrativo di 3-5 stagioni.

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
In the series finale, Quinlan devises a desperate plan, but the costs are enormous. Eph wrestles with his conscience, Fet undertakes a suicide mission, and Dutch and Gus dig in for battle as humankind makes its final stand against the Master and his Strain.
An unexpected guest brings old conflicts to the surface, dividing our heroes, threatening the group’s trust. With questionable new intel in hand, they launch a make‐or‐break final assault on the Master.
Reeling from loss, our heroes regroup. To defeat the Master, they must locate him first. Our heroes devise a new plan to track him through human collaborators, beginning at the blood farm with someone Dutch knows all too well.
His health failing, Setrakian ignores Eph’s warnings, pushing himself to the limit in his quest for victory and revenge. Fet and Quinlan race back to Manhattan, while the Master seals off the city and prepares to eliminate them all.
Fet and Quinlan have to figure out how to get the nuclear bomb back to New York, while a desperate Eichhorst draws near. Love‐struck Zack tries to learn more about his new crush, but makes a devastating discovery.
