Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were among the most successful groups of the Motown roster during the period 1963-1967. In contrast to other Motown groups such as The Supremes and The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas were known for a harder, R&B sound, Dancing in the Street.
As the Box Tops, they entered the studio under the guidance of producer Dan Penn to record Wayne Carson Thompsons song The Letter, though under two minutes in length, it was an international hit in mid-1967, reaching Billboards number-one position and remaining there for four weeks. The record, produced by Dan Penn, sold over four million copies and receivedtwo GrammyAward nominations, and was awarded a gold disc.
Sam & Dave were an American soul and rhythm and blues (R&B) duo who performed together from1961 through 1981. The tenor (higher) voice was Samuel David Moore (born Samuel David Hicks on October 12, 1935 in Winchester, Georgia), and the baritone/tenor (lower) voice was Dave Prater (May 9, 1937, Ocilla, Georgia – April 9, 1988, Sycamore, Georgia).
