Note : Japanese horror mangaka Junji Ito's work has proven notoriously difficult to adapt, with a string of low-budget Japanese films the only real attempts. This is probably the best known, still noticeably low budget, but a decent effort given the limitations. It's a bit of a mess, though, with a muddled script, at times laughably overacted, and an image quality that's... not good, but it does hit home in some sequences, and the sound design is pretty creepy and good. The strange, dreamlike atmosphere, when it works, is pretty effective, and, well, if you like Japanese horror, you should probably at least take a look.
A pair of highscool students try to figure out what's going on in their small town as more and more people seem to develop an obsession with spirals, to the point where they die from suicide, self-neglect, or various weird attempts to twist their bodies into spirals. Things get out of hand when some people develop snail-like shells and drip with slime, and others' curly hair takes on a life of its own.
This "remaster" is quite bad, it looks like either an upscale from SD or just a very shitty telecine. I've adjusted the extremely elevated black levels and performed some other minor improvements, but it's still definitely not great. Sound is better, showing off the abstract sound design, and the director's commentary (subtitled to English) is interesting enough.
