Heroine Katherine MacColl inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where after a series of supernatural 'accidents', she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell. Previously owned by a satanist, the drafty old structure is now held in thrall by zombies, ghouls and sundry other nonpaying guests.

A family's murderous battle over some bayfront property is the subject of director Mario Bava's bloody horror-thriller, which many have cited as the grandfather of the modern slasher film. Claudine Auger is the scheming daughter of a murdered Countess; her staged suicide forms the basis of the film's plot. In a seemingly unrelated subplot, four hippies arrive in a dune buggy led by Brigitte Skay, who dances the Shake and swims naked before having her throat hacked open with a machete. Skay's boyfriend has his face chopped with the same machete and the other couple has a spear thrust through their bodies as they make love. All of these murder scenes were imitated in Steve Miner's Friday the 13th, Part 2, and the film's style influenced countless American slasher films of the 1970s and '80s. Bava also includes a strangulation by telephone cord, a gory axe decapitation, a man speared to a wall, and five other murders. Antefatto was a trendsetting film, and paved the way for literally hundreds of graphically violent imitations. The film exists in several versions, differing mainly in the extent of the bloodshed.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the acknowledged "Godfather of Gore," shattered taboos against graphic violence onscreen with this bloody horror film. Mal Arnold plays Fuad Ramses, a mad Egyptian caterer with bushy eyebrows who is gathering body parts to use in a "Blood Feast" to honor the ancient goddess Ishtar. He's been hired by the mother of young Egyptology student Suzette (Playboy Playmate Connie Mason) to cater a special party. Luckily, Suzette happens to be dating a cop (Thomas Wood) who is also in her class and is on the case of a gruesome serial killer who removes body parts from his female victims. The cop finally solves the case and chases Ramses into the back of a garbage truck, where he is bloodily compacted. Wood and Mason returned the following year in Lewis' Two Thousand Maniacs!

Staten Island's Andy Milligan, notorious for 16-millimeter backyard horror projects, often incorporating thrift-shop period costumes and plentiful fake-looking gore, applies his signature brand of awfulness to the Ten Little Indians scenario with this amateurish whodunit. The plot requires six potential heirs to spend the night in their late patriarch's allegedly-haunted estate, after which the survivors (if any) will claim his inheritance. Before long, the guests are being murdered in a variety of messy (and unconvincing) ways, including impalement, decapitation, burning alive and bisection with a two-handed saw. The usual Milligan touches abound, from dead bodies seen breathing or blinking their eyes to four-tined pitchforks which somehow become three-tined when plunging through a victim's body. The entire scenario, including the pleasant seaside setting, was handled far more deftly in Mario Bava's excellent thriller Bay of Blood in 1971.
