Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II:
A sequel to the popular real-time strategy game by Relic Entertainment, set in the cult Warhammer 40,000 universe, where over a dozen feuding factions fight a bloody war. In the story campaign, we can assume control of the armies of four sides of the conflict: humans (Space Marines), Orks, the Eldar, and the Tyranids. Contrary to its predecessor, in Dawn of War II we have a much larger freedom in terms of playing and can determine the order of conquest. Moreover, every mission ends with a fight against a so-called boss who is more resistant to damage and has more powerful attacks at his disposal. In the title, we command units that usually consist of only several troops, which serves to strengthen the tactical side of the gameplay and the way players bond with their subordinates. As we progress, the experience level of our armies also rise, thanks to which they can perform increasingly better on the battlefield.
Dawn of War II is a real-time strategy game for PC / Windows, set in one of the most popular future universes, the gothic world of Warhammer 40.000, where over a dozen factions wage a bloody war with one another. The humanity lives under the protectorate of the immortal Emperor who is artificially kept alive by machines. He sends his fearless legions to fight against the forces that threaten his holy reign.
This time around, the single player mode allows the player to lead brilliantly-trained Space Marines into battle. Contrary to the previous installment of the series, we have a much greater influence on the order of conquest. Our units are onboard a spaceship that orbits around the planet we fight for. Each mission is concluded with a fight against a so-called boss, which is a more resistant and powerful enemy. As we progress, our Space Marines’ experience increases and so does their battle performance.
In Dawn of War II, we command units that consist of several troops most of the time. The developers decided to personalize them in order to make the player identify with them easier. Therefore, each soldier has his own name and a leader named not only by his rank but also full name.
Dawn of War II for PC / Windows is the sequel of the series which was launched in 2004 and received three expansions thus far. The game is powered by a new version of the Essence engine used in another hit by Relic Entertainment – Company of Heroes. The technology not only provides better graphics and support for DirectX 10 but also almost unlimited terrain deformation.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising:
A standalone expansion pack for the second installment of the RTS that takes place in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game was developed by Relic Entertainment. As the title suggests, Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising concentrates on the faction of the Chaos space marines. The game takes place on the ice-covered planet Aurelia. Thousand years ago the planet was “eaten” by the Warp storm and now it returned bearing the legions of Chaos. During the game the player leads the space marines of the Blood Ravens chapter who must not only face their former brothers, but find a traitor among themselves as well. The biggest change in game mechanics was adding an individual morality meter for each unit. The meter is influenced by corruption and redemption points achieved with the decisions made by the player. Chaos Rising adds a few multiplayer features such as new units for each faction and previously unavailable maps and modes.
Chaos Rising for PC / Windows is the first expansion pack for the great real-time strategy that takes place in the world created by Games Workshop. The expansion focuses on the armies of Chaos and it doesn’t require the basic version of the game, although without it one can only use Chaos Space Marines faction in multiplayer modes. It is worth mentioning that even then players can fight against the owners of the basic version of the game. The expansion was developed by Relic Entertainment, studio known for creating such games like Homeworld, Company of Heroes and the Dawn of War series.
It all begins on planet Aurelia, which is filled with ice. Thousand years ago it was consumed by the Warp storm and disappeared without a trail. Now Aurelia has returned along with legions of Chaos. The story of the expansion concentrates on Blood Ravens fighting their former brothers who now serve the dark gods. Space Marines must face not only the Chaos and its followers, but track a traitor among their own ranks, as well. From time to time one will also face Eldars, Tyranids and Orcs. The new campaign consists of more than a dozen of missions that offer new challenges and possibilities. Most of all, one can develop characters to thirty experience level and select various abilities.
The biggest change in gameplay mechanics involved adding an individual morality meter for each character. During the game, the player will face various choices which can generate corruption or redemption points. The points are usually given based on decisions made during missions, like for example: destroy an enemy base or walk around it so that later the citizens of the planet will be able to use the defense structures. If it is destroyed, corruption level increases. The death of every guardsmen that were supposed to be protected will have a similar effect. Corruption also increases when player uses some items or not takes a specific character to the mission. The system determines powers and equipment available for the warriors. As corruption increases, new abilities are unlocked but some older ones become unavailable, similarly as various equipment parts.
In addition to the singleplayer mode, Chaos Rising adds few features to online mode. Most importantly, the expansion allows taking control of the Chaos Marines. The developers also created one new unit for each faction, a few previously unavailable maps and game modes. The Last Stand mode was greatly improved as well and now each faction can participate in it. In addition to that, the whole campaign can be played in cooperation mode.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution:
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution is the second standalone expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, a real-time strategy game for PC / Windows. It was developed by Relic Entertainment.
The action of Retribution takes place ten years after the events of Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising. Defeating the Black Legion and a demon called Ulkair did not stop the fighting, though. The Aurelia sector is still being regularly attacked by Tyranids, pillaged by Orks, and torn apart by an internal conflict within the Blood Ravens’ ranks. The Eldar also become involved in his mess, drawn to this part of the galaxy by the rumors about an ancient artifact lost ages ago. The situation was supposed to be calmed down by the arrival of numerous Imperial Guard units but their progress turned out to be faint and their successes rare. Eventually, the Empire lost its patience and started preparations for Exterminatus, the final solution that will obliterate all life in Aurelia sector. A race against time begins. The only thing that can persuade the Inquisition into abandoning their plans for mass extermination is to stop the Chaos-tainted Grand Master Kyras.
The player learns the subsequent plot themes from several perspectives since the new single player campaigns let us assume control over all races that so far appeared in the game (Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Eldar, Orks) as well as a completely new one – the Imperial Guard. Each nation has its own characteristic traits and different combat style. Ork warriors are huge, brutal, green-skinned monsters. They like to fight hand-to-hand, although they don’t shy away from flamethrowers and experimental armaments. Tyranids, in turn, bear a stronger resemblance to merciless and deadly animals rather than sentient lifeforms. They attack in numerous groups, usually in melee. They are modeled after an insect colony—as creatures devoid of their own consciousness, they will do everything to realize a given goal. The nation of Eldar is highly developed in terms and culture and technology. Though they have many kinds of melee weapons at their disposal, there are also numerous long-range units in their armies’ ranks.
Retribution is characterized by several changes in the gameplay mechanics. Contrary to its predecessors, we can gather raw materials and spend them on training auxiliary units directly on the battlefield. If a given mission’s condition allow it, we can also construct vehicles that provide support for fighting units. Moreover, Retribution introduces new abilities for heroes, including powerful area-of-effect attacks. Thanks to the option of military training, the developers could also implement damage bonuses available only to particularly numerous groups of warriors.
Dawn of War II: Retribution for PC / Windows offers more than single player novelties. The expansion introduces new elements to the multiplayer mode, as well. These include both previously unavailable units as well as maps.
