Yothu Yindi were a household name in Australia in the early 1990s. Blending traditional aboriginal instruments and music with contemporary rock/pop, they had a huge, yet brief surge in popularity. If you have been unfortunate enough to see the film Encino Man (and are not an Australian over the age of 35), you may recognise the song Treaty from the film's soundtrack. I know that Brendan Fraser is experiencing something of a renaissance right now, but that film is abysmal, let's be honest here...
The sad finale to the Yothu Yindi story was the tragically premature death of lead singer/songwriter Mandawuy Yunupingu at the age of 54. Yothu Yindi were with us briefly, but left a huge mark on Australian pop culture.
